Indian Ocean History Programme Four researchers at the Department of History, professor Christian Meyer (Ancient History), associate professor Anders Björkelo (Middle Eastern and Islamic African History), professor R.S. O'Fahey (Middle Eastern History) and post. doc. fellow Anne Bang (Middle Eastern and Indian Ocean History), are in different ways engaged in research and teaching on the History of the Indian Ocean as an extension of their Middle Eastern/Mediterranean basis. In 1999 Meyer and Björkelo offered an intermediate course in Indian Ocean History. At that time O'Fahey and Bang had already conducted research in the Indian Ocean for some years. Anne Bang did her doctorate on the Indian Ocean and receives currently a post-doc. scholarship from the Norwegian Research Council for her own project. In 2000 Björkelo and Meyer wished to become more active in this field and it was decided to formalise these activities as a Programme and to develop new research projects. As a consequence, Meyer and Björkelo launched a joint project funded from 2001 by the Norwegian Research Council: Trade, migration and cultural change in the Indian Ocean. Anders Björkelo functions as project coordinator and supervisor. Christian Meyer is the responsible editor of this web page, which has been set up by the assistance of dr. art. student Bente Opheim. Bang and O'Fahey are considered as associates of the joint project and all four work closely together. This page will contain information about the activities of the project, seminars, lectures, field work, and reports. Visitors to the page may also post e-mails to the project participants. In fact we hope to extend our Indian Ocean network through this web page.
