Mussolini was successful in relation with the Catholic Church. In 1929 he concluded the Lateran Treaty, which normalized the relation between the Italian state and the Vatican. The Vatican was recognised as an independent city, which became a separate state within the city of Rome.The treaty was confirmed by the new Italian state in 1948.
