The seal is surrounded by the text, written in the hand of the Middle Ages: Anessione Venezia Giullia. 5 gennaio 1921.

In each corner a star. The star - is often used in traditional allegoric depiction of Italy and symbolises the good faith protecting Italy. The arms of Savoy and the knot are not depicted.


Trieste was prosperous city in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Nearly two-thirds of the city population was Italians. In a secret treaty of London, April 1915, it was agreed to give the city to Italy after the end of the war. This was as a part of a group of territorial concessions rewarding Italian alliance with the Triple Entente.
