After cycling football was the most popular sport in the 1920s and 30s. Giro d’Italia was a way of unifying the country, and also football had patriotic overtones.
The year 1934 was a real propaganda triumph for the fascist regime. Italy not only staged the World Cup, but also won it. Mussolini himself handed out the medals to his victorious team. Sport achievements contributed much to the general popularity of the regime.
