Pope Boniface VIII established the Holy Year in 1300 as a centenary observance. It was later reduced to first 50 years and then 25 years.
The Holy Year begins on Christmas eve. The Holy doors of the Roman basilicas of St. Peter (St.Pietro), St. John Lateran (St. Giovanni in Laterano), St. Paul Outside-the Walls (S.Paulo) and St. Mary Major (S.Maria Maggiore) are opened. The Year ends with their closing on following Christmas evening.

All the stamps have the same border panel, with the words Anno Santo 1925 on the bottom. There are no fasces or arms of Savoy.
