alessandro manzoni  (1785-1873) was an italian poet and novelist. he is best known for his work "i promessi sposi", Bride and Bridegroom, (1827) which had immense patriotic appeal for Italians of the nationalistic Risorgiomento period and is generally ranked among the masterpieces of world literature. The heroes in the novel are not warriors or counts, but normal people. In 1860 he was made senator of Italy.
