Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-72) was an Italian writer, politician and revolutionary. He was one of the firsts to dream of the Italian nation. He started his political career in 1830 as a member of the secret, patriotic and revolutionary society "Carboneria". The same year he founded Giovine Italia, Young Italy, a patriotic movement. It made propaganda for a free and independent unitary republic. He wanted the revolution to come from the people, not from a secret society of intellectuals. Mazzini is known as a champion of the Italian "risorgiomento", and he wanted the Italian nation to unite in one republican united state. He believed the faith in the nation and the will to succeed was the only way to succeed. In 1848 he briefly served under Garibaldi and in 1849 he was elected triumvir of the republic of Rome. He was an uncompromisingly republican and refused to participate in the parliamentary government that was established in Italy in 1861. His most famous work is the "Dei doveri dell’Uomo", The human duties, which discusses his ideals of freedom, progress and humanity. He was a patriot, internationalist, but not a nationalist.

Arms of Savoy are not depicted on the stamps.
