The province of Venezia Guillia was formed after World War I from part of the territories ceded by Austria to Italy in 1919, and included Friuli, Trieste, Istria, and part of Carniola.
Trieste was occupied by Italian forces to 1921, when the city was officially included in the kingdom of Italy.

In 1923 the province was dissolved. Part of the territory was included in province Udine, and Istria was divided into smaller provinces.
